Ketamine is used as a quick and efficient treatment for depression, primarily for patients who experience symptoms of depression that do not respond to conventional antidepressants. The efficacy of this treatment method in the treatment of depression-related anxiety and the depression phase of bipolar disorder has been demonstrated. Ketamine is indicated for use as an anaesthetic and is also used for pain treatment. The mechanism of ketamine differs significantly from standard antidepressants and its effect can be seen much faster (often during the same day).

Ketamine is administered intravenously in small doses during day care treatment procedures. The procedures take place in a private room in an environment promoting relaxation. Patients are fully awake during administration and under constant surveillance by our staff. Common side effects include drowsiness, changes in body perception and a light to moderate increase in blood pressure and heart rate which subside within a few hours after administration. Patients must remain under our surveillance for a brief time after the end of the treatment.

Ketamine is generally used for medical treatments comprising several successive intravenous infusions on different days. Follow-up treatment may be required and this will involve administration over a longer period of time and with longer intervals. The simultaneous use of conventional antidepressants is usually permitted.

A psychiatrist will determine the suitability of ketamine for specific patients based on prior consultation.
