Tonsil removal surgery (tonsillectomy)

Look for appointment times

Pharyngeal tonsils, or palatal tonsils, are paired organs located on both sides of the pharynx between the pharyngeal arches. The most common reasons for removing the tonsils are chronic inflammation of the tonsils and oversized tonsils that cause complaints to the patient.
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and in day surgery, i.e. in the evening of the operation day, you can usually go to home treatment.

Before surgery:

• 1-2 weeks before surgery, the necessary blood tests and other tests (e.g. ECG) are performed.
• 1 week before surgery, do not use anti-inflammatory drugs containing aspirin, ibuprofen, or ketoprofen.
• Planned surgery is not performed during an acute illness (fever, runny nose, cough, diarrhoea, etc.).
• On the day of the operation, you must not eat for 6 hours and drink for 4 hours before the operation or procedure, unless the doctor has instructed you otherwise.

After surgery in a medical facility:

• After surgery, the patient stays in the day surgery unit for observation for up to 8 hours if necessary.
• Drowsiness, nausea, headache and muscle soreness may occur after anaesthesia.
• Bleeding from the mouth may occur immediately after surgery – blood and saliva in the mouth should be spat out, not swallowed, as swallowed blood causes nausea and vomiting.
• Do not cough/”clear your throat” immediately after surgery.

The post-operative regime at home:

• A slight rise in body temperature after surgery is normal. If the temperature rises above 38 ˚C, contact our short number 1500, where you will receive initial advice and, if necessary, you will be referred to a doctor’s appointment.
• For up to 3 weeks after surgery, avoid heavy physical exertion and hot procedures (bath, sauna, solarium).
• In the first weeks after surgery, foods and drinks must be cooler (at body temperature), softer in texture and milder in taste to avoid traumatizing the wounds and not causing excessive pain.
• Consuming a sufficient amount of fluid is important for recovery. Drinking water moisturizes the mouth and throat and reduces the risk of pain and inflammation.
• Smoking prevents healing!
• Post-operative pain usually lasts up to 2 weeks. The pain may radiate to the ear(s). Use paracetamol as a pain reliever (preferably as a soluble tablet, syrup or suppository for children). Your attending physician will give more detailed pain management instructions if necessary after the operation.
• After surgery, initially a whitish, later yellowish/greyish coating forms on the wounds, which can also temporarily cause bad breath. The roofs are removed by themselves, usually in 10.−14. the day after surgery.
• Oral hygiene must be good after the operation, brush your teeth 2 times a day, carefully at the back to avoid injuring the wounds.

An appointment with a Confido specialist is required for referral to surgery. Examinations analyzes and other necessary pre-operative services are added to the price of the operation.

NB! There is a risk of bleeding for up to three weeks after surgery until the covers are removed. Bleeding is usually stopped by holding ice cubes in the mouth and placing a cold pack on the back of the head and neck. If the bleeding does not stop within 10-15 minutes, an ambulance must be called and they will take you to the emergency hospital. If bleeding occurs in a child, the ambulance should be called immediately.
