Endometrial abrasion and biopsy
Look for appointment timesEndometrial ablation, commonly referred to as uterine cavity cleaning, is a procedure in which the lining of the uterine cavity is removed using a special loop-like instrument (curette) and sent for histological examination. The uterine lining usually regenerates during the next menstrual cycle. The procedure is performed to clarify a diagnosis or stop bleeding.
To prevent vomiting and the entry of acidic stomach contents into the lungs, you must not eat for six hours and not drink for at least four hours before the operation. You should also avoid smoking and chewing gum.
The main indications for referral to the procedure are
- Unexplained uterine bleeding
- Bleeding due to menstrual cycle disorders or post-abortion bleeding
- Pathology of the endometrial lining detected during ultrasound examination
- Atypical results in cervical cytology examination
Procedure process
- Endometrial ablation is performed under short-term anesthesia through the vagina.
- First, a gynecological examination is performed to determine the size and position of the uterus.
- Then, if necessary, the cervical canal is dilated and the uterine lining is removed.
- The obtained uterine tissue sample is sent for histological examination, and the results are provided to the treating physician within two weeks. Histological examination helps to specify cellular changes.
Post-procedure period
- After the procedure, you will be monitored in the day surgery department for a few hours. Nausea and dizziness may occur after the operation. You can leave the day surgery department once you have fully recovered from the surgery.
- Do not drive a car for 24 hours after anesthesia. If possible, have someone accompany you after the operation.
Possible complications include
- Bleeding, which may be caused by impaired uterine contractions.
- Injury to the uterus or cervix during the procedure. If the uterine wall is injured, surgery may be necessary.
- Infection of the uterus and pelvic organs, requiring antibiotic treatment.
- Complications related to anesthesia primarily associated with individual sensitivity to medications.
- Vaginal bleeding may occur for up to two weeks after endometrial ablation.
- Avoid sexual intercourse, sauna, baths, swimming, and tampon use for two weeks after the procedure.
- The next menstrual period should occur 4-5 weeks after the ablation.
- If menstruation has not started by that time, consult a doctor to determine the cause.
Note: In case of heavy bleeding, fever, or abdominal pain, contact our paid information hotline at 1500 for initial consultation, and if necessary, you will be directed to a doctor’s appointment.
