Mini bypass surgery
Look for appointment timesMini bypass surgery is performed laparoscopically, meaning through small incisions. During the operation, a smaller volume stomach is created through vertical resection, where a portion of the stomach is removed. The remaining portion forms a new gastric pouch, also known as the stomach pocket. Subsequently, the intestines are rerouted, and the new gastric pouch is directly connected to the small intestine. This allows food to bypass a part of the digestive tract (hence the name “bypass”), thereby reducing the absorption of food and calories.
Mini bypass surgery is suitable for patients with a body mass index (BMI) over 35 kg/m2. Since mini bypass surgery involves both stomach reduction and rerouting of the small intestine, reducing calorie absorption and food intake, the expected weight loss is also greater (70-80% of excess weight).
Mini bypass surgery is reversible, which means that if necessary, the procedure can be reversed or converted to another form of bariatric surgery.
For any weight loss surgery to result in significant weight loss, it is important for the patient to make noticeable lifestyle changes to promote weight loss and avoid regaining weight. Additionally, patients need to increase their level of physical activity.
After the surgery, patients initially consume liquid foods, and under the guidance of nutrition therapists, their diet is gradually modified over the following weeks, transitioning to pureed foods and eventually solid foods after a certain period of time. Regular medical check-ups are also necessary after the surgery.
The different options and specifics of weight loss surgical interventions will be explained to you by the Confido bariatric surgeon, who will determine the most suitable approach for you.
