Biofeedback therapy
Look for appointment timesBiofeedback therapy is intended for patients with migraine and/or tension headaches. The aim of biofeedback is to teach patients how to influence the physiological processes in the body to improve their health.
How does biofeedback therapy work?
At the first appointment, we will assess how bodily functions (breathing, heart rate, skin temperature, muscle tone, sweat gland activity) respond to a stressful situation and how well they recover afterwards. To measure bodily functions, sensors that display changes in real time are placed on the body.
Based on the data collected, we will train the patient in the more problematic functions in subsequent biofeedback therapy sessions. The aim of biofeedback therapy is to improve the response to and recovery from a stressful situation to prevent long-term changes in the body’s functioning. Biofeedback therapy teaches the patient how to control and modify autonomic nervous system functioning.
Initially, it will only possible to control nervous system functioning during the therapy session but with repeated sessions and at-home exercises, it is later possible to achieve these changes without the biofeedback device.
During therapy, the patient’s autonomic nervous system is influenced in such a way that their reaction to stressful situations does not cause symptoms (headaches).
To achieve the best outcome, it is recommended to follow a treatment course of five sessions, going to therapy twice a week.
The therapy is not suitable for patients with anxiety disorders.
