General surgery is a broad specialty that deals with the diagnosis and (surgical) treatment of diseases affecting the skin and soft tissues, abdominal wall, endocrine system, and, in depth, the gastrointestinal tract.

At the general surgeon’s appointment, the patient will be thoroughly examined, the results of previous investigations will be reviewed, the need for further investigations (computed tomography, ultrasound, endoscopy) will be assessed and a plan will be made for further treatment. Minor surgical procedures can be performed during the same appointment.

The most common reasons for consulting a general surgeon are:

  • hernia (incisional hernia, inguinal hernia, umbilical hernia, etc.)
  • gallstones
  • skin and soft tissue tumours.

The general surgeon sees patients from the age of 14.
