A pediatric infectious disease specialist focuses on the consultation, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of infectious diseases in children. You may seek help from this specialist if your child has an acute intestinal infection (e.g., salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, shigellosis, yersiniosis, rotavirus enteritis), an acute respiratory viral infection (e.g., parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), rhinovirus, coronavirus), a rash-associated infectious disease (e.g., monkeypox, enterovirus, chickenpox, scabies), a neuroinfection (e.g., tick-borne encephalitis, Lyme disease), a urinary tract infection or viral hepatitis (Hepatitis A, B, or C)
A pediatric resident is involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases in children and adolescents of all ages. Among other responsibilities, a pediatric resident also deals with the diagnosis and treatment of acute infectious diseases. If necessary, they may refer the child for additional tests, examinations, and consultations with other specialists. You may also seek help from a pediatric resident if your child has a persistent health issue that affects their quality of life and causes concern for the parent.
