Prostate specific antigen (PSA) test
One of the methods for early detection of increased prostate cancer risk is blood testing for prostate specific antigen (PSA). PSA is a protein produced in prostate tissue, the blood concentration of which is normally very low, but increases in the case of benign enlargement of the prostate, and especially in the case of prostate tumors.
PSA testing is used for early detection of prostate cancer risk, and for determining treatment efficacy. Make an appointment with one of our GPs or urologist for PSA testing.
Who do we recommend it for and how is it performed?
- Men should undergo annual PSA testing from the age of 50.
- If anyone in your immediate family has had prostate or breast cancer, you should start tests as early as 45.
- PSA testing is performed on a blood sample.
- Test results arrive within a few days.
