Look for appointment timesPhimosis is a condition where the foreskin of the penis is too tight and cannot be retracted over the head of the penis or glans, either partially or completely. The main symptoms are painful retraction of the foreskin, pain in the foreskin area during erection, or inflammation related to phimosis, and urinary obstruction. The foreskin should be retractable over the glans from the age of 4.
Phimosis can be congenital or can develop during life due to infections and inflammation of the urinary tract and foreskin. Inflammation can cause the foreskin to scar, become thickened, less movable, and in severe cases, adhere to the head of the penis.
Paraphimosis, which is the constriction of the glans by a tight foreskin ring, is a less common foreskin condition. In this case, the tight foreskin is stuck behind the head of the penis, causing painful swelling of the glans. Circumcision surgery is indicated for both phimosis and paraphimosis.
Since the operation is painful, it is usually performed under general anesthesia, but it is also possible to operate under local anesthesia. In this case, a local anesthetic solution is injected into and under the foreskin. During the operation, the entire foreskin is removed with a circular scalpel, and the wound is sutured.
